Julius Caesar by candlelight is exactly the kind of Shakespeare I come to London for. Booked the moment it was announced.

I saw Joe Hill-Gibbins' Ghosts in this playhouse and it was one of the most intense evenings I have ever spent in a theatre. Having him back for Julius Caesar, with the conspirators close enough to touch, was an easy yes.

Julius Caesar has always been my favourite of the Roman plays, and the thought of watching it in a room lit only by candles already gives me chills. The plotting in the Senate, the betrayal, Mark Antony turning the crowd with every audience member cast as a citizen of Rome. It should feel like standing in the middle of the conspiracy. The cast looks brilliant too, and we have booked for a weekend evening. Counting down the days.
Things to Know Before Booking Julius Caesar Tickets

What Your Ticket Includes
Your ticket covers entry to Julius Caesar at the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse in the seat you select — the full performance of approximately 2 hours and 35 minutes. Food, drink and anything not listed as included are extra.

Age Recommendations
Strictly for ages 16 and above. The play features depictions of war, suicide and violence.

Best Time to Attend
Weekday matinees tend to be the calmest. Evening and weekend performances, along with the dates around Christmas and New Year, are the first to sell out in this intimate, candlelit playhouse — book early if you have your heart set on one.

Facilities
Swan Bar & Restaurant sits right beside the playhouse for drinks and dining before the show, and the foyer café is open during intervals. A cloakroom is available, but please avoid bringing large bags or suitcases. Bankside and Borough Market are a short walk away for a pre-show meal.

Accessibility
The playhouse is wheelchair accessible, with a ramp at the entrance and lift access to the performance space. The wheelchair position is in Box A of the Lower Gallery, reached by a door on the piazza level, with a companion seat alongside. Induction loops are installed, assistance dogs are welcome, and BSL-interpreted, audio-described, captioned and relaxed performances are scheduled during the run.

How Long Do You Need at Julius Caesar in London?

The performance runs approximately 2 hours and 35 minutes. Allow around three hours at the theatre in total so you have time to clear security, settle in and find your seat without rushing.

Arriving 30 minutes before curtain-up is comfortable. Latecomers may only be admitted at suitable breaks in the performance, at the discretion of the theatre — so if you are eating beforehand on Bankside or at Borough Market, give yourself a clear half hour before the show.
