About Vaudeville Theatre

History

The Vaudeville Theatre history dates back to 1870, when the venue first opened on the Strand showcasing vaudeville performances and musical revues. Designed by celebrated theatre architect C. J. Phipps in a Romanesque style, the theatre has been rebuilt twice, with each redevelopment carefully preserving elements of the original design. The current building, completed in 1926, still features rare historic stage machinery such as thunder drums and lightning sheets, offering a unique glimpse into early theatrical effects. Over the years, the Vaudeville Theatre has hosted a wide range of acclaimed productions including Stomp!, The Ladykillers, The Duck House, The Importance of Being Earnest, Emilia, and Magic Goes Wrong, and is currently home to the hugely popular musical SIX. Since 2003, the theatre has been owned by Max Weitzenhoffer and became part of Nimax Theatres in 2005, securing its place as a key venue in London’s West End.

Productions

Over the years, the Vaudeville Theatre has been home to many of the West End’s most celebrated productions, earning a reputation for hosting high-profile plays, comedies, and musicals. Among the most famous are The Importance of Being Earnest, staged multiple times with acclaimed casts including Penelope Keith, David Suchet, and Jennifer Saunders, as well as the hit comedy The Ladykillers and the political satire Handbagged. Audiences have also enjoyed standout productions such as Stomp!, Emilia, Magic Goes Wrong, and True West starring Kit Harington, alongside star-led performances from actors like Jeff Goldblum, Kim Cattrall, and Christian Slater. In recent years, the theatre has achieved global recognition as the long-running home of the smash-hit musical SIX, firmly establishing the Vaudeville Theatre as a key venue for both iconic revivals and modern West End successes.
